Kingdom Manifesto: Blessed Are the Mourners

Matthew 5:4

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

THE BIG IDEA: Those who mourn over sin will receive comfort.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

1. The self-righteous never discover satisfaction.

Matthew 23:11-12 The greatest among you shall be your servant.  Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

2. Consequences of covering

Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

Psalm 32:3-4 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. 

3. Confession provides comfort.
