The Final Days of Jesus—Betrayal

Matthew 26:47-56

March 14, 2021—South Gate

 

Introduction

 

The life of Jesus shows us how we can turn betrayal into blessing.

 

1. Yielded to the plan of God (vv. 49–50)

 

2. Yielded any retribution (vv. 52–53)

 

We cannot accomplish the plans of God with the ways of the world.

 

Romans 12:19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” ²⁰ To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

 

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.

 

God’s people are called to REDEMPTION, not REVENGE.

 

3. Yielded alone (vv. 55–66)

 

2 Timothy 4:16-17 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! ¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me . . . .
