         *The Cause:

            Carnal Christians!

            Identified by three characteristics:

            1. Christians behaving like non-Christians (3:1-4)

            2. Christians failing to grow spiritually (3:2)

            3. Christians refusing to repent of sin (3:3-4)

   2. The Cure for the Controversy (vv. 5-9):

      > Selfless Service

   3. The Cautionary Proclamation (vv. 16-17):

      > Painful Purification

II. The Bottom Line

• Children of God are the temple of God.
• Collectively, the children of God make up the church of God.
• God’s church is Holy, therefore, we should all be Holy.
• Anyone who continually brings harm to the church can expect God to deal harshly with them.

III. The Reflection Question

   * Am I living the life of a carnal Christian?

• Am I growing deeper in my faith?
• Am I creating any controversy in the church?
• Am I living for the mission of Christ or for the mission of me?
• Am I in danger of experiencing the purifying hand of God?
