Pastor Jayson Workman
1 Peter 5:7
South Gate Baptist Church — November 21, 2021
Introduction
Your worry is no match for God’s PLAN and PASSION for you.
- The Problem of Anxiety
People-pleasing: Somebody may not like, love, or respect us. When they don’t, we are afraid that we’re not really important. We hardly say no, because we’re afraid that we might lose the love/respect of others.
Perfectionism: We strive to make sure that everything is right all the time—the house, our clothes, our appearance, our work, our projects. Our identity is secure, as long as everyone around us thinks we are nailing it.
Protection (over): We try to protect from every hurt, illness, financial, and safety issue. I am not talking about neglect.
Performance/Purpose: If you are like me, there is a temptation to find your purpose in what you do and what you’ve accomplished. We must work to focus on our primary calling of being a disciple of Jesus.
- The Principle of “Casting”
- The Power of Compassion “He cares for you . . .”
Weekly Application: 4 Actions You Can Take
- pray
- quote scripture to yourself (Psalm 56:3; Philippians 4:6)
- focus and serve today (Proverbs 16:3)
- rest

Beyond our Borders
Malachi 1:1-5
Pastor Jayson Workman
South Gate - September 12, 2021
We were not just saved from something; we were saved for something.
Quote: “The church that does not evangelize will fossilize, but God always has a plan. The process begins again as a new movement expands the borders of the kingdom further than before as a new wave of risk-takers steps up and steps out.” —Peyton Jones
A life blessed by God will go beyond the borders to proclaim the gospel.
Quote: “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” —John Piper
Instead of fulfilling their calling, they had become complacent.
- Declaration of compassion (v. 2–4)
Psalm 63:3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
God’s compassion is best demonstrated through the cross.
Quote: “The cross of Christ is the response of God to men for belittling His name. The cross exists because mankind—loved by God, created by God, set in motion by God—betrayed God and prefers his stuff to Him.”
- Declaration of complacency (vv. 2–4)
Never let a life of complacency stand in the way of your calling.
Never doubt God’s love just because life gets difficult.
Quote: “Every difficulty is an opportunity to demonstrate to others what the Lord can do for those who put their trust in him” — Warren Wiersbe
When you start doubting God’s love, you will miss out on God’s direction.
- Declaration of commission (v. 5)
Malachi 1:5 Your eyes will see this and you will say, “The Lord be magnified beyond the border of Israel!”
Isaiah 9:6 I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation shall reach to the end of the earth.
Psalm 67:4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy
2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God find their yes in him.
1 Thessalonians 1:8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.
Quote: “Every saved person this side of heaven owes the gospel to every person this side of hell.” —David Platt

A Church on the Move
Acts 1:6-9
Pastor Jayson Workman
South Gate- September 5, 2021
Introduction:
Movements move, and if you’re not moving, you’re not a part of the movement.
- Jesus gave us a powerful proclamation in the gospel.
Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
- Jesus gave us a powerful promise in the Holy Spirit.
Quote: “The world was not turned upside down by experts, but converts.”
- We want to be a movement.
- We want to empower and release you to follow the Spirit.
Quote: “The apostles didn't have years of seminary or formal training under their belts, but they did have the power of the Holy Spirit”
Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
- We never want to be a ministry that takes care of our own needs, or a place people attend.
- Jesus gave us a powerful plan in the Great Commission
Quote: “Jesus called us to evangelism, not clever marketing.” —J.D. Greear

Big Idea - “Rebuilders approach God in a way that is authentic and prepared.”
- Come to the Lord with a Humble heart (v. 1)
- Come to the Lord with a Focused heart (v. 2)
- Come to the Lord with a Honest heart (vv. 2-3)
So many come to church today with a cavalier attitude and we miss out on the greatness of experiencing God because we’re not prepared.

Rebuilding requires people who are passionate and full of faith.
Those who make a difference aren’t always the best, but they care the most!
- Define the Mission Carefully (vv. 4–5)
When God saved you, He simultaneously called you into the mission of God.
- Make Plans Carefully (vv. 6–8)
His request was specific.
Luke 14:28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
Proverbs 16:3 Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.
His response was in faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
- Inspire People Passionately (vv. 17–18)
His PASSION was an overflow of his PERSONAL walk with God.
COMMUNION with God increases your CONFIDENCE in life.
Quote: “Light yourself on fire with passion, and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” —John Wesley

When anger RULES in your heart, it will RUIN your life.
- Rooted in the heart (vv. 21–22)
Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

b. Selfish expectations
- Ruins the best parts of your life (v. 22)
Quote: “Anger, held on to, is not only sin, it is spiritually dangerous.”
Hebrews 12:14-15 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled. . . .
